Background
Pietermaritzburg Rape Crisis was founded in 1978 as a NGO and run entirely by volunteers. In the mid 90’es it started a community outreach project and employed 2 women, one working with empowering women and the other teaching life skills to high school learners. Pietermaritzburg Rape Crisis ceased to operate as an independent organisation in 1998, when its services were taken over by LifeLine, Pietermaritzburg.
Principal Aims
Rape Crisis’s principal aim was and still is: prevention of and opposition to, rape and other forms of gender based violence.

- We provide information about rape and gender-based violence to any person or community.
- We provide community education on gender-based violence through public education.
- We aim to improve liaison between police, hospitals and courts and the survivor.
